Laser marking

Posted on06/29/2021

What is laser marking?

Laser marking is the printing of a pattern on the stainless-steel article. This pattern can be a name or a logo, it can be text or a vectorised image. The marking is permanently printed on the stainless-steel dish and is resistant to washing. The laser marking is not embossed and does not attack the metal. Just to the touch, it does not feel. It is very precise, with a precision of less than a tenth of millimetre.

How does laser marking work?

The marking machine sends 2 laser beams which meet on the surface of the part to be marked and burn the stainless steel very superficially, to leave a trace which will be the marked point. The power of the machine, 40W, is just enough to leave a mark on the surface but is not enough to tear off the metal and make a mark in the depth. This is why there is no relief in this laser marking.

Why laser marking?

Marking allows you to personalise your stainless-steel tray and at the same time to carry out a communication operation. To personalise means to put the name and logo of your restaurant, hotel or shop on it and thus to show the customer that his stainless-steel dish or stainless-steel honey dispenser was not chosen at random, but that, on the contrary, the retailer attached particular importance to showing that his place was unique. So, when you are in a restaurant where the cutlery is marked with the name of the restaurant, the image of the restaurant that you have as a customer is completely changed. You think that the restaurateur or hotel owner who has taken the care to have his cutlery personalised will take the same care in the kitchen when preparing meals. Personalising your stainless-steel dishes shows that you care about the customer and delivers a very positive message.

Is it possible to mark all the items?

Laser marking is possible on all stainless-steel surfaces. Ideally, the surface must be flat for the marking to be perfect. If it not perfectly flat, the marking will gradually change in colour and intensity and eventually will no longer be visible. This makes it difficult to mark on curved surfaces such as the Maitre d’hotel plate covers, samovars or the edges of round dishes. On these types of surfaces, only small markings (approx. 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm) should be made. Optimal surfaces for marking are in the inside or on edges of flat dishes or trays. In this case, a marking of 7 cm x 5 cm can be made without any problem. At Stellinox, we are equipped to mark all articles, even 1 m long trays.

How much does laser marking costs ?

It greatly varies, depending on how long the machine takes to mark the item. The marking time is itself depending on the size of the pattern or text to be marked, the surface to be marked, and the number of markings to be made. For a standard marking of approximately 4 cm x 2 cm on a flat surface, the cost will be around 1.00 to 1.20 € per marking, with a light colour. How do I ask for laser marking? Just contact Stellinox by email: info@stellinox.eu or on the phone +33 4.73.80.44.00 to explain your needs and ask for a quote. To carry out the marking, you just have to send by email the file of the logo to be engraved, vectorised and in High Definition. These are generally files in .pdf, .tif, .eps, .ai format. If you wish to include text, you do not need a file, just let us have the text.
