Can melamine be microwaved?

Posted on04/28/2023

What is melamine?

Melamine is a synthetic, plastic resin made from a colourless, odourless chemical substance combined with formaldehyde to form a resin that forms the base material for all melamine tableware.

The quality of melamine tableware depends on the other additives used in its manufacture. It is a food-safe material, provided that the precautions for its use are followed.

The melamine tableware presented by Stellinox, which offers you a range of melamine plates, bowls, salad bowls, platters and trays, displays, utensils, cutlery and serving accessories, is distributed by APS Germany and is guaranteed BPA-free and 100% pure melamine. The range offers a wide choice of colours, designs and finishes. Stellinox also offers a choice of rectangular melamine GN trays in white or black.

This is not melamine coated bamboo tableware, nor is it specific melamine tableware for children or babies. The different pieces on offer can be used for buffet presentation or for table service and presentation.

Can melamine tableware be microwaved?

No, melamine tableware is not microwave safe. Melamine should not be heated above 70°C. Melamine tableware should therefore not be used in the kitchen, either in a conventional oven or in a microwave oven. Just a few seconds would be enough to heat up the melamine molecules and release the toxins, making the dish unusable. Nor can you put boiling water in your melamine container at the maximum temperature allowed.

At 70°C and above, a thermal decomposition process releases the toxins: you should no longer use the dish or salad bowl, nor eat the hot meal.

We therefore urge you to respect the maximum washing temperatures, not to heat a dish in a microwave or traditional oven and to check that your melamine crockery has no scratches or cuts so that no harmful substances are transferred to food or drink.

Maintenance is easy: you can wash melamine crockery in a dishwasher, respecting the maximum temperature of 70°C, or in water with detergent.

Melamine tableware is shockproof and breakproof.
