Why stainless-steel buckets are essential in the food industry: a complete guide

Posted on09/04/2023

The agri-food industry processes 70% of French agricultural production. It's a sector of activity that plays an important role in regional planning and contributes to the vitality of the area, as well as being crucial in meeting consumer needs for processed food products.

Professionals in this industry need the right equipment to ensure consumer hygiene and safety, with impeccable quality.

Professional-quality stainless steel buckets are essential equipment for these professionals, and we'll explain why, and what types of buckets we offer to meet their needs.

Why choose stainless steel?

Corrosion resistance

Stainless steel offers a number of advantages, because it is anti-corrosive properties: highly resistant to corrosion caused by various acids present in meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, drinks, etc. This is particularly true with 18/10 stainless steel, also known as AISI 304, which has a chromium content of 18% with 8% nickel. This stainless steel is especially well suited to contact with foodstuffs: it does not rust, and prevents bacteria from multiplying in food.

Easy cleaning and maintenance tips

It's important to clean a stainless-steel bucket to ensure its durability. A quality stainless steel bucket won't rust, even after several years, as long as you clean it carefully and with the right products, and choose a grade of stainless steel to suit your use.

Above all, don't use aggressive products that are unsuitable for the purpose: bleach, ammonia, detergent, paint stripper or descaler... or abrasive sponges, steel wool or steel sponges, or abrasive paste. If rust appear in the stainless steel, it is because you have brought it into contact with chemical or aggressive products that are not suitable for cleaning stainless steel.

Simply clean with warm, soapy water, then rinse with clean water and dry carefully.

Durability

Choosing stainless steel means choosing a durable material. It is a healthy and easily recyclable material, with a recycling rate of over 80%. All stainless-steel cuttings can be recycled, and once recycled, stainless steel retains its properties, making it a material that can be infinitely recycled.

Because it is neutral in terms of the environment and health, it is widely used in the food industry, which is subject to numerous hygiene and health constraints.

The different types of stainless-steel buckets available

Stellinox offers a range of stainless-steel buckets made in Europe, in Sweden or Denmark, from 18/10 stainless steel.

Stainless steel buckets are made in one piece, without welding. This avoids any risk of rust at the bottom of the bucket. The eyelets, which are used to fix the handle to the bucket, are integrated into the body, so there's no welding either. All stainless-steel buckets come with a handle.

All buckets are graduated from the 8-litre model (the 7-litre model is not graduated) up to the 20-litre model. For all stainless-steel buckets except the 7 and 8 litre models, we also offer a lid that fits perfectly into the bucket, but is not hermetically sealed.

How do I choose the right stainless-steel bucket?

Depending on the type of food, its size and capacity. It's important to choose the right size:

Small capacity stainless steel buckets are suitable for small quantities of products, such as spices;

Medium-capacity buckets are suitable for products requiring intermediate packaging.

Large capacity buckets are suitable for packaging or transporting bulk products.

Don't forget that the stainless-steel bucket weighs a certain amount, plus the weight of the food; for handling, think about the total weight that needs to be handled. It's important to consider the quantity of product and the frequency of use; plan for a slightly larger bucket to make handling easier and avoid spillage.

A 10-litre stainless steel bucket, for example, is used by beekeepers to transfer and preserve honey, without altering its taste.

National and international standards

EN 10088 is the main standard for general-purpose stainless steels.

At international level, the composition of stainless-steel grades is standardised in the new ISO 15510 standard.

Most stainless steels comply with European standards (EN DIN 10088) and American standards (ASTM standards). Other countries have set standards, such as Japan and the UK, but these are not widely known internationally.

The advantages of choosing a stainless-steel bucket from Stellinox

Variety of choice

With capacities ranging from 7 litres to 20 litres, the graduated stainless-steel buckets and their lids are made from 18/10 stainless steel 1.7 mm thick. The eyelets for fixing the handle are integrated into the body of the stainless-steel bucket. All stainless-steel buckets are graduated from the 8-litre model upwards and are available with or without bottom (with bottom from the 12-litre model upwards), from 7 to 20 litres (20 litres with bottom only).

The bottom, also known as the foot, makes it easier to grip the stainless-steel bucket when emptying it, and also reduces the surface area in contact with the ground. Stainless steel lids for each diameter, except for 7 & 8 litre stainless steel buckets.

Compliance with standards

They are made of 18/10 stainless steel, which makes them especial resistant to corrosion, including contact with aggressive liquids such as acids. This makes them ideally suited to the needs of both the food and chemical industries.

Choosing a stainless-steel bucket of this quality is the guarantee of having a bucket that will be used for a long time, and that will ensure the durability of your equipment.
