What are the different types of food cool displays?
Food display counters are essential equipment for the presentation, preservation and display of food in retail outlets such as bakeries, butchers, supermarkets and some restaurants. They play an important role in maintaining the freshness and quality of products while making them visually appealing to customers. Each type of food display counter is designed to meet specific preservation and presentation requirements, depending on the type of product and the retail environment.
Refrigerated counters
Refrigerated cabinets are used to keep food at cool or cold temperatures, often between 0 and 4°C, to prevent spoilage. They are found in the chiller sections of supermarkets, bakeries and other food outlets.
- Positive refrigerated display counters: this type of display keeps food at temperatures above 0°C; it is ideal for cold meats, dairy products, pastries, etc.
- Negative refrigerated cabinets: this type of display case is used to freeze food or keep frozen products at temperatures below 0°C. This type of cabinet is particularly used for frozen ice cream, fish and seafood.
- Rear service window: customers can see the products, but the sales assistant has to serve them; this is a typical window in butchers' and fishmongers' shops.
Heated display cases
Heated display counters can be used to keep prepared food at a warm temperature so that it can be eaten immediately without having to be reheated. This type of display case can be found in bakeries (for hot pastries), sandwich shops and fast-food outlets (hot dishes, pizzas, quiches).
- Bain-marie showcases: these keep ready meals at a constant temperature thanks to a hot bain marie underneath the containers.
- ventilated heated displays: these use ventilated hot air to keep food hot without drying it out.
Neutral display showcases
These display showcases are neither heated nor refrigerated: they are used to display food that does not require a specific temperature, for dry products such as bread or certain types of pastry.
- Bakery or patisserie display cases: used to display bread, croissants and cakes that can be kept at room temperature.
- Snack display showcases : these are ideal for sandwiches and fast food and are usually located near the checkout in supermarkets or cafes.
Ventilated cold display
These displays distribute the cold evenly thanks to an internal ventilation system that ensures uniform food preservation. They are ideal for fresh produce such as meat and dairy.
Static refrigerated display showcase
The cold in this food display showcase is generated by a cooling plate, so that the temperature is lower near this eutectic plate and higher in other areas.
This technology is often used to display fruit and vegetables, which are better able to withstand small temperature fluctuations.
Wall-mounted display showcases
These are used in supermarkets to display large quantities of fresh produce such as yoghurts, cheeses, sausages and drinks. They can be opened and closed with glass doors.
Ice cream display showcases
Specially designed for the preservation and presentation of ice cream. They need to maintain a very low temperature while providing good visibility of the product.
- containers display showcases, often used by ice-cream manufacturers, allow direct service by dipping into ice cream trays.
- Ice cream cone display showcases display pre-packed cones and ice cream.
Sushi or fish display showcase
These food display showcases are refrigerated and designed to maintain optimal humidity levels to keep products fresh. They are generally long and narrow to highlight the products while ensuring maximum hygiene.
Self-service counters
These counters are open and allow customers to serve themselves. They are often found in the fresh departments of supermarkets or in fast food outlets such as takeaways.
- Open refrigerated cabinets: used for salads, sandwiches and drinks
- Self-service heated display showcases: for hot food such as pizzas.
Mobile showcase
Ideal for caterers, events or outdoor markets. These display cases can be refrigerated or heated and some are mounted on wheels for easy transport.
