Can I put a stainless-steel dish in the freezer?

Posted on06/20/2022

You want to stop using plastic bags to freeze food and ready meals... but how? What containers can you use in the freezer for your ingredients, recipes and all your food preparations? Glass or stainless steel?

Freezing without plastic, with glass

Nowadays, we are all trying to find new alternatives to plastic in order to reduce the pollution of our planet, and we are very aware of the health risks associated with the use of certain plastics (we've all heard about phthalates and bisphenol A...).

That's why glass containers are being used more and more for storing food in the fridge, but also for freezing food, in the jars we all have (glass jars that can be reused once the contents have been consumed) and that have a hermetic seal.

The range of special glass containers for freezing is diversifying and we now see glass containers with lids specially designed for freezing.

Stainless steel can withstand very high temperatures and can be used in the oven, but can it be put in the freezer?

Yes, you can put a stainless-steel container in the freezer. Stainless steel is a material that can withstand extreme temperatures, both high and very low, and it can withstand freezing very well, with no risk of the stainless-steel dish cracking, breaking or warping when placed in the freezer. It is even recommended for long-term freezing, up to 12 months! Stainless steel can withstand extreme cold. The lids are fitted with silicone seals to prevent air leakage, ensuring that your stainless-steel tins are airtight.

Stainless steel containers are particularly recommended for freezing meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.

To avoid compact blocks, we advise you to pre-freeze the pieces of fruit and vegetables on a horizontal plate, well-spaced out, for about 3 hours, and then place them in your stainless steel box in the freezer.

Don't fill your dish to the brim: liquids expand when they freeze, so leave some space to avoid spilling. If your bowl doesn't have a lid, cover it with cling film or a suitable lid to prevent the food from picking up freezer odours. If your stainless-steel dish has a lid, make sure it is suitable for the freezer, especially if it is made of plastic.

It's important that your stainless-steel container is airtight so that cold air can't get in.

Otherwise, your food will be drier and harder after cooking. Forget greaseproof paper, aluminium trays and cling film, which can only be used once and may contain traces of toxic products.

Remember to fill your container to no more than three-quarters of its volume: frozen food expands when it freezes, just like water!

Stainless steel is suitable for freezing, storing, cooking and transporting food at high temperatures. Known for its excellent thermal conductivity, it can also be used to keep food at the right temperature for several hours. It can be used in the traditional oven... the only negative point is that it is not compatible with use in the microwave. We invite you to discover the stainless-steel lunch boxes, ideal for freezing your food. You can also opt for stainless steel gastronorm containers, but we recommend that you use an airtight lid with a silicone seal. Of course, all your stainless-steel crockery can go in the freezer.

To reheat the filled stainless-steel box, you can use the traditional oven, place it in a bain-marie or reheat the contents in another dish.

Of course, some foods can be frozen without packaging, such as bread. But this is a method that should only be used for very short periods of time, as the food dries out under the effect of the cold and quickly loses its taste and nutritional qualities.
